Choosing the right putter is one of the most crucial decisions a beginning golfer can make, because it’s the only club that’s nearly guaranteed to be used on every hole. With that said, here are two important factors to consider when trying to pick out the right putter.
Perhaps the most important part of a putter is its length. Because the eyes should be over the ball, and the hips over the heels, finding a putter that accommodates this setup is crucial. A grip that goes down the shaft to accomplish this means that a shorter putter is required, whereas a grip that sees the hands go beyond the putter’s ends, a longer putter is in order.
Getting the correct head weight is also important. Simply modifying the length of the putter is often times not enough though. Shortening the putter shaft, for example, lightens the swing weight of the club and makes it feel lighter in the hands. The typical 35” putter has a head weight of approximately 330 grams, but shorter putters will need to increase the head weight, sometimes up to 380 grams depending on the amount of shaft length cut down.
